IDRIJA – UNESCO HERITAGE OF LACE & MERCURY

Visit the main sights in town and its vicinity. Get to know the town as such and the museum exhibitions at Gewerkenegg castle  the tourist mine Anthony’s Shaft. Anthony’s Shaft was first opened in the year 1500 and is known to be one of the oldest still preserved entrances into mines in Europe. The renovated castle Gewerkenegg dating back to the 16th century offers visitors the permanent exhibition Five Centuries of the Mercury Mine and the Town of Idrija. The permanent exhibition Idrija Lace – A History Written in Thread  tells the story of hand-made Idrija Lace and its makers – lacemakers who have been supporting family budgets throughout the centuries.

After you treat yourself to typical local cuisine for lunch, you will also see the Kamšt  waterwheel and the mysterious karstic lake Divje jezero nearby Idrija is one of the gems of Slovenia’s natural heritage.
